The origin of the cotes du rhone wines
Discover the history of the exceptional northern Rhône wines. During these 4 hours tour you will explore the roots of Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph. How were seeds wine originally sown in the vineyards of our region? What was the nectar Vitis Allobrogica?
With your guide you will follow in the footsteps of the Romans and you will meet a passionate winemaker who enjoys experimenting with Roman wine styles of yesteryear.
You will be heading south of Lyon to visit a family who is running a particular winery where you will taste a wine made according to a Roman recipe. The winemaker works in close collaboration with a museum on the Roman vinification. Here, you will also have the opportunity to taste great “Appelations” wines, like Saint-Joseph, Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie.
You will head off for a wine tasting at Les Vins de Vienne, wine estate created 20 years ago by tree well-known winemakers of our region who dreamt to revive the Roman Designations. You will have the honour to taste the Sotanum, Tabernum and Heluicum. Then, to finish off your day trip, you will go for a stroll through the vineyards of Vitis Vienna, the site where the Romans would have presumably planted their first vines and where nowadays these wines are regaining their famous past reputation.
Full day tour is possible with the visit of the archaeological museum in Saint Romain en Gal/Vienne. We will guide you throughout history of grapevines and wine in our region by viewing the exceptional museum collections of mosaics, frescoes and the very interesting reconstituted Roman vineyard.
